Following
the successful first Micro and Nano Flows Conference in 2006 at the University
of Strathclyde, the second in the series, MNF2009, was held at Brunel
University, West London. The Conference Chair was Michael Collins with
co-chairs David Emerson, Tassos Karayiannis, Carola König and Jason Reese. At
Brunel University Michael Collins is a Visiting Professor and Tassos
Karayiannis Professor and Deputy Head, of the School of Engineering &
Design, with Carola König being a permanent Research Fellow in the Brunel
Institute for Bioengineering. Jason Reese is the Weir
Professor of Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics at
Strathclyde University, and David Emerson, Head of the Centre for Microfluidics
and Microsystems Modelling at the Daresbury Laboratory, Warrington. The meeting
was co-sponsored by a number of organisations including the Institution of
Mechanical Engineers (Thermofluids Group), the Institute of Physics and Engineering in
Medicine, the Italian Union of Thermofluiddynamics (UIT),
the Heat Exchanger Action Group (HEXAG), the Institute of Mathematics and its
Applications (IMA), the Process Intensification Network and Brunel
University itself. The
conference was organised and hosted by the three Brunel-based conference
committee members Michael Collins, Tassos Karayiannis, and Carola König.
We followed up the vision of MNF2006, that these ’flow
systems are present in every field of engineering’. Novel features for the
Brunel conference were the initiation of a Bioengineering stream and a Special
Session on Modelling the Mesoscale.
Like the Strathclyde meeting the Conference was very successful with around 115
registrations, including delegates from as far afield as India and USA. The
administration was competently provided by Andrea Donnelly and Beatriz Lopez.
The ‘human touch’ they and all of us sought to give, together with the
arrangements and facilities in general, were warmly appreciated by the
delegates. Thank you all.
The
conference was principally organised in three parallel sessions with the
exemption of the plenary and three keynote presentations including the special
session on Modelling the Mesoscale which could be attended without
conflict by all delegates. The following conference session topics were
covered:
·
Both for
Thermofluids and Biomedicine:
1.
Micro and Nano
Flow Fundamentals
2.
Measuring,
Sensing and Control
3.

We have great pleasure in confirming that a large number of the papers
are being prepared for Special Issues of four scientific Journals:
Applied
Thermal Engineering,
Heat
Transfer Engineering,
Medical
Engineering & Physics, and
IMA Journal
of Applied Mathematics.
We are sure that we speak for the delegates when we express our grateful thanks to the Editors in Chief and Publishers of these Journals. As these Special Issues appear updated details will be given on this website.
The third in the conference series, MNF2011, will be held at the Makedonia Palace Hotel, Thessaloniki,
Greece, 22-24 August 2011. Further details to follow soon.
